There were a mass of different stories circulating at the time and there still are!
All these are known to be later creations, and were excluded for precisely that reason. Thomas aroused a lot of scholarly interest because it does at least show evidence of having had access to a source similar to that of the Gospels, even though the document itself is significantly later.
